Private Photo Vault vs Hushkeeper

Private Photo Vault is one of the best-known vault apps on the App Store, with decoy passwords and break-in reports. Hushkeeper takes a different route: published encryption, no ads or tracking, and backups that only ever contain ciphertext.

Updated

Short answer. Private Photo Vault is popular and feature-rich, including break-in photos with GPS. Its App Store privacy label lists data linked to you and usage data used for tracking, and the listing doesn't name its encryption method. Hushkeeper publishes its encryption, has no ads or tracking and needs no account.

Facts about Private Photo Vault below come from its App Store listing as of October 2026.

Decoys: one fake password vs vaults that don't exist

Private Photo Vault's decoy password opens a fake vault, which is a well-proven idea. Hushkeeper goes one step further: every pattern opens its own vault and the unlock screen never shows how many there are, so there's no "real" and "fake" to tell apart. A separate duress pattern opens a harmless vault and removes every other vault from the device, while their encrypted backups stay safe in iCloud.

Break-in reports

If catching who tried to open the app matters to you, Private Photo Vault has a clear advantage: it photographs the person and records GPS. Hushkeeper doesn't offer this.

Privacy label

Apple asks every developer to declare what data the app collects. Private Photo Vault's label lists purchases, user content, identifiers, usage data and diagnostics as linked to you, and usage data as used to track you. Hushkeeper has no account, no ads and no tracking.

Recovery

Private Photo Vault's Cloud Vault password can't be recovered if you forget it. Hushkeeper works the same way on purpose: your recovery phrase is the only way back in if you forget your pattern. Write it down and keep it somewhere other than your phone.

When Private Photo Vault is the better choice

  • You want photos and GPS of anyone who tries to get in.
  • You value a very long track record and a huge number of reviews.
  • You need one of its additional languages.

When Hushkeeper is the better choice

  • You don't want ads, trackers or data linked to you inside a vault app.
  • You want encrypted backups for free, not as an upgrade.
  • You want vaults that can't be counted, plus sharing with expiry dates and open limits.
